FAQ – Newcomers

FAQ for Newcomers

Q. I’ve never been to a Bible study or church service?

A.You may have never been to a Bible Study. Don’t worry, there aren’t quizzes and we won’t make you recite any genealogies. Going to an entirely new place with all new people can be intimidating. Immanuel is a loving place where you will find friendships and relationships as everyone learns about Jesus and ourselves in a supportive environment.

Q.  How should I dress?

A. For Bible Study dress comfortably. For worship services, we don’t have a dress policy. Dressing so as not to distract others is a good rule of thumb. The dress will vary from suits and ties to jeans, so you will feel comfortable here.

Q. What should I do with my children?

A. Your infants and toddlers (up to age 3) are welcome in our nursery during our worship service. We encourage parents to have their little older children in worship. Older children (up to 11) are welcome in the nursery during Bible Study. We love kids. Can you believe it, even Pastor Jim was a kid once too?:-)

Q. Will I be welcomed but not singled out?

 A. We are a welcoming group and will be glad that you are here. We won’t ask you to stand up and introduce yourself or to participate in the Bible study discussion. Christ welcomes us into worship, into the fellowship of his family. The focus is on Christ in our worship, teaching, and fellowship together. We have every reason to be welcoming because of Him.

Q. What should I expect when I arrive for worship?

A. When you arrive at Immanuel for worship greeters will welcome and hand you a bulletin. When you enter the sanctuary, be sure to grab a red hymnal and black songbook. There are also Bibles to use during the service. There are no reserved seats so feel free to sit where you please.

Q. What will the service be like?

A. Services begin at 10:15 am and last about 75 minutes on Sunday mornings. The worship service will contain Bible readings, prayers, an offering, a message from the Bible, the singing of Psalms, hymns, and some contemporary songs. Our worship services are simple, Bible-saturated, reverent, and joyful. You can listen to some sample sermons on our Sermons page.

Q. Will I know when to stand and sit down in the worship service?

A. The leader will let you know when to stand and sit.

Q. What if I have questions?

A. Good, we welcome them. If you have questions, you can ask the pastor after the service or give him a call during the week.

Q. Churches sometimes seem to be after your money. Will I be expected to give if I visit?

A. We believe in tithing (giving 1/10 of our income), but newcomers should not feel obligated at all to give.

Q. What do I do after the service?

A. After the service, please stick around to chat. We would love to meet you and get to know more about you. We hope to see you soon!

Q.  I am interested or have more questions, what should I do?

A. Please contact Pastor Jim at 763.210.5846 or join us on Tuesday nights for Bible study.
